Types Of Retaining Walls We Build On The Gold Coast

Concrete Sleeper

Precast concrete sleepers in timber-look, stackstone or smooth finishes. Termite-proof, fireproof and incredibly long-lasting, ideal for taller engineered walls or walls that you want to last longer than you. The Gold Coast's most popular retaining wall product.

Composite Sleeper

Composite sleepers have come leaps and bounds, strong, light with a sleek modern look. The brand we commonly use is Tuff Poly, can be built to 1.2m in height, using either galvanised posts or composite posts. Product comes with 25 year structural warranty and 60+ year life span rating.

Hardwood Sleeper

Australian hardwood sleepers set into galvanised steel posts for a flush finish or using hardwood sleeper posts. Very popular choice on the Gold Coast for their natural look, structural strength and 25+ year service life when built correctly with drainage.

Treated Pine Sleeper

A cost-effective option for garden beds, low retaining and tiered planters. We use H4-treated pine with galvanised posts or Timber posts with full drainage detailing so they last. This option has the least structural capability and shortest lifespan so is limited to smaller walls and garden beds.

Sandstone Block

Sandstone block walls are an excellent structurally sound option for a more natural stone look. Ideal for properties with good access for machinery and want a strong, natural product that lasts up to 100 years, when built properly.

Frequently Asked Quetsions

  • Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?

In Queensland and NSW, retaining walls over 1m generally need council approval and engineering if they fail to meet the following guidelines.

The wall is 1.0 metre or less in height (measured from the natural ground surface).

The wall only supports soil it does not support any additional loads (such as a driveway, building, or fence).

It is located at least 1.5 metres away from a building, structure, or another retaining wall.

It is not being used as or carrying pool fencing.

If a fence is on top, the combined height of the retaining wall and fence must be less than 2.0 metres.

The wall is not in an easement, covenant area, or a waterfront/oceanfront setback area

If your wall meets standards for council approval and engineering not to worry we liase with council and an engineer on your behalf to get everything sorted for you.

  • How long do sleeper retaining walls last?

A properly drained hardwood sleeper wall on galvanised steel posts will last 25+ years. The two killers are poor drainage, undersized posts and footings. Minimum pier hole sizes to meet standards for a 100mm galvanised steel post is 450mm x 450mm wide pier holes.

  • Which wall type is right for my site?

It depends on wall height, soil, surcharge loads and your aesthetic. Straightforward builds, engineering for projects that require more complex structural needs or we engage a landscape designer for full concepts.
